International travel has never been more accessible for Filipinos. According to the 2019 Global Passport Index, the Philippine passport is stronger than ever, ranking 60th worldwide. Many countries now allow Filipinos to visit without the hassle and expense of a visa. Currently, all ASEAN countries are visa-free to Philippine passport holders, with an additional 24 visa-free countries around the world.
What is a Visa?
A visa is an official document granting permission to enter, reside and exit a foreign country. Traditional visas can take months to process and require extensive paperwork. Furthermore, they are often expensive and give no guarantee of approval. To save time and money, some travelers prefer to visit countries that are visa-free. Destinations that issue eVisas or visa on arrival (VOA) are another convenient option.
Types of Visas
Visa-Free: These countries do not require a visa to enter. But travelers are still subject to normal immigration checks.
E-visa: This is an electronic visa which you apply for online. It is imperative you apply through the country’s official embassy website. After completing an online form, any required documentation can be scanned and uploaded to your application. Typically, an application fee will be charged to your credit card. Upon approval, the visa may be electronically linked to your passport number or emailed to you for printing.
Visa on Arrival (VOA): This visa is issued at the port of entry by an immigration officer. After completing the required forms and paying a fee, a visa stamp or sticker is placed in your passport. This is a common option for travelers who do not have an embassy located in their country. However, some countries have pre-application requirements.
Entry Requirements
Many countries have entry requirements beyond a valid visa or visa exemption. Travelers may be required to bring additional documentation such as: ID photos, proof of sufficient funds, onward tickets, hotel bookings or vaccination card. Many countries require a passport valid for several months beyond your travel dates or require a certain number of blank passport pages. At least six months validity and 1-2 blank pages are standard.
