Work Visa Options Available for Foreign Employees in Singapore

In general, there are three common types of Singapore work visa options for all foreign employees: 

  • Employment Pass (EP) – for foreign professionals, C-level employees (CEOs, managing directors, and general managers), or specialists sponsored by a Singapore-based company
  • Work Permit – for foreign laborers and basic-skilled workers who want to work in Singapore’s in-demand industries and are from approved source countries
  • S Pass – for foreign mid-level skilled workers sponsored by a Singapore-based company

Employment Pass

Who Is It For?

As previously mentioned, Employment Pass (EP) is intended for foreign professionals, C-level employees (CEOs, managing directors, general managers), or specialists sponsored by a Singapore-based company. 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, a foreign employee must have any of the following:

  • Skill-set relevant to the position sponsored
  • Educational qualifications
  • Professional background relevant to the position sponsored

Young, entry-level professionals must earn at least S$4,500 a month to qualify and more for experienced professionals Additionally, applicants in the financial sector must earn at least S$5,000 monthly to qualify. 

EP holders with a salary threshold of at least S$6,000 monthly have the option of bringing their families to Singapore, using either a Dependant Pass or a Long-Term Visit Pass. After at least six months of living in Singapore, they can apply for permanent residency. 

Additional Factors for Increased Chances of Securing an EP

Depending on the assessment of the MOM, the following may influence the visa approval:

  • Right designation
  • Right work experience
  • Right salary
  • Nationality
  • Company structure
  • Niche industry

EP Visa Validity

The validity of an EP may vary but are generally as follows:

  • First-time applicants -up to 2 years
  • EP renewals -up to 3 years

Work Permit

Who Is It For?

A Work Permit (WP) is issued to foreign basic-skilled workers who want to work in Singapore’s in-demand industries and are from approved source countries. 

Eligibility Requirements

Interested applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • At least 18 years old and not more than 50 years old (58 years old for Malaysian citizens) during the time of application 
  • Must already possess a job offer from their Singapore-based prospective employer

Work Permit Validity 

The validity of a Work Permit is generally 2 years but will largely depend on the validity of the employee’s passport, the Banker’s/Insurance Guarantee, or employment period, whichever is shorter. 

S Pass

Who Is It For? 

A Singaporean S Pass is issued to foreign mid-level skilled workers sponsored by a Singapore-based company. The application is assessed based on a point system with consideration for salary, educational qualifications, skills, job type, and work experience. 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for an S Pass visa, foreign workers must satisfy the following:

  • Monthly salary of at least S$2,500 for young, entry-level applicants and a higher threshold for experienced applicants
  • Educational qualifications
  • Professional background relevant to the position sponsored
